Graduate of London’s Central Saint Martins, Helle Mardahl is an artist and designer whose work is a combination of sculpture, installation, painting, fashion and interior design. Her work is extravagant, flamboyant and a real experience.
Her richly colored designs are alive and natural, fragile yet robust, simple yet ornate.
Helle Mardahl Studio operates at the intersection of art and functionality to create a dreamy universe of richly colored glass designs of eccentric deviance. Influenced by nostalgic memories from childhood and iconic films such as Alice in Wonderland and Charlie & The Chocolate Factory, the collection of glossy glass creates a conceptual candy universe of magic, dreams and indulgence.
The process of creating our candy objects is quite fascinating. Using the ancient technique of mouth-blowing, each object has its own unique shape and personality. Each design and every part of the collection is made by hand with precision and care – from glass to brass details to assembly of the lamp. Countless individual steps are required for every single product before being ready. Every piece is a one-off and signed by Helle Mardahl.
“We have had a lot of years dominated by grey and beige.”
Inside homes, shops and restaurants across Copenhagen, it’s easy to see that Danes tend to favour more muted aesthetics. It’s not uncommon to see white layered PH 5 Louis Poulsen pendant lamps hanging above wooden tables fringed with Y-back chairs on light wood herringbone floors and soft-white curtains draping over windows. Classic but always almost lacking in colour.
